• The Florida Times-Union is a perennial winner of journalism awards for its writing, design, graphics, photography and Internet operations. In the last year, we have won 40 national, regional and statewide awards competing against other large metro dailies in Florida.

• Jacksonville is a fast-growing, business-oriented city, home to the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars and the site of the 2005 Super Bowl. We are surrounded by water — the 310-mile St. Johns River flows through our downtown, and the Atlantic Ocean and some of Florida’s best beaches are 15 miles away.

Radio/Production: Maryland Morning with Sheilah Kast

Interns play a vital role in the show’s production, and have a unique opportunity to get “behind the scenes” of radio journalism. Interns handle both administrative and production duties. General office tasks may include making audio copies, photocopying, mail runs, and updating guest lists. As interns become more proficient in general responsibilities, other duties may include logging tape, learning digital editing, assisting with studio recordings, doing research for radio pieces and interviews, maintaining digital archives, and creating website updates. All interns are welcomed and encouraged to participate in planning meetings, where interview possibilities are discussed and most editorial decisions are made.

Internships are flexible, and can be adjusted to suit an individual’s needs. Interns can earn college credit, or volunteer their time in exchange for the opportunity to learn about public radio. The minimum time commitment for a fall internship is 10 hours/week; 15 hours/week is preferred. Interns may take two weeks off, with at least 2 weeks’ advanced notice to staff.

Some of the characteristics WYPR seeks in volunteers include: creativity, a willingness to learn, the ability to work with others in a professional environment, and a passion for public radio. The importance of a strong work ethic and a willingness to approach independent projects over time cannot be overstressed.

Journalism: Baltimore Sun Sports

The Sun is seeking academic interns to work in its Sports department starting this fall. The interns must receive college credit; they will not be paid.

Though their work will be tied to the beginning of the high school sports seasons, interns could start in the latter part of August. They would be responsible for processing high school results -- taking highlights, scores and summaries over the phone, compiling them from e-mails and coding them in the appropriate formats for the newspaper. Though the length of shifts and exact times could vary, hours generally would be during 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. We don't anticipate having our interns doing any writing, except perhaps contributing to roundups compiled in the office.

The focus is on handling high school agate, but if interns prove proficient, we might have them help our editorial assistants in processing college and pro sports agate.
