It is open to undergraduate writers and reporters of all political convictions and backgrounds, and submissions may include college newspapers, magazines or periodicals as well as college online articles published on accredited college institution Web sites. The award recognizes the editorial pursuit of freedom and American ideals.

Boston Globe Summer Internship: Journalism

The Boston Globe summer intern program began more than 50 years ago as an opportunity for college students interested in journalism to gain practical experience on a major newspaper.

The largest group of interns works in metro on general assignment. Other intern reporters are assigned to sports, living/arts, business, and the Washington, DC bureau. We also have intern positions in the photography and graphics departments, and on the copy desk. The copy editing positions may be filled by Newspaper Fund* interns, and a health/science position is provided through the Kaiser Foundation.** Internships are NOT limited to students with undergraduate journalism majors. All students currently enrolled in an undergraduate program may apply, as well as journalism graduate school students who have not had professional experience as a newspaper reporter.

An aptitude for newspaper work is the most important qualification for the internship. Applicants must have had at least one previous internship at a daily newspaper. Applicants must have a driver’s license and be able to type at least 30 words a minute.

Summer interns work as full-time employees for twelve weeks, between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Interns are paid a weekly wage, and shifts vary. An intern supervisor serves as a writing coach and there are weekly meetings with editors and staff members on a range of issues and topics pertaining to journalism.

In February 2005, The Globe was the only newspaper included in “America’s A-List of Internships” published by the Wall Street Journal. To make the final list, the Journal said, “internship programs had to receive multiple recommendations from employers” and “stand out from competing programs.”

Application forms can be obtained from: Mary Rourke, Newsroom, The Boston Globe, P.O. Box 55819, Boston, MA 02205-5819 (617-929-3212), or downloaded from our website:
